MODULE KW24 - SOUTH AFRICA OVERLAND
DAY 01
Arrival Johannesburg International Airport. The Family
van Nieuwkerk or one of their staff personally meets
you. Transfer to Pretoria. Welcoming lunch, the rest
of the afternoon free.
Accommodation: Guesthouse / Lodge in Pretoria.
Meals included: Lunch.

DAY 02
After breakfast, a slide presentation on intercultural
communication in South Africa - a country with many
different cultures and 11 official languages! Talk presented
by Dr Hanneke du Preez, a specialist in this area. (Talk
is presented in Dutch).
You leave via Johannesburg - "Egoli" - the
city of gold! - For Soweto. Soweto is the biggest black
township in South Africa. Here you will meet the local
people. You will visit the Hector Pietersen Museum,
dedicated to the victims of the 1976 unrest in Soweto.
After a traditional lunch in the township, transfer
back to Pretoria for a City Tour. You will visit the
Voortrekker Monument, Church Square en Paul Kruger's
House.

DAY 03
We travel with the N4 via Witbank and Middelburg towards
Mpumalanga to start with the Panorama-route: a visit
to Dullstroom and Lydenburg, and from there we move
on to Sabie, the centre of the Forestry Industry in
SA. After a visit to one of the many waterfalls in the
area, you travel to Pilgrim's Rest, a small town that
gained fame during the Gold Rush in the 1800's.
The whole town is a living museum. Today's trip will
end at the small town of Graskop.

DAY 04
Today we follow the Panorama-route to Blyde River Canyon,
God's Window, the Three Rondavels; you will also see
Bourke's Luck Potholes.
Late afternoon we enter the famous Kruger National Park
at the Orpen Gate.
Game viewing on your way to camp.

Satara)

DAY 05
Full day game viewing. Tonight a game drive in an open
4x4 vehicle.

Full day game viewing.

DAY 07
This morning your last game drive, and then we leave
the Kruger National Park. We travel to the Kingdom of
the Swazi's - Swaziland. Here you will meet the friendly
and colourful Swazi people. A visit to the Ngwenya Glass
Factory and a trip to a typical Swazi market are included.

DAY 08
Today we travel south and we exit Swaziland at the Sicunusa
Border post. We travel through Kwa-Zulu Natal to the
small town of Hluhluwe.
After your arrival at the luxury Lodge, a visit to one
of the local pine=apple farms is in store. Piet and
Ilana de Jager, also owners of the Lodge, own the farm.
During the late afternoon you will be taken to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi
Park for a game drive in an open vehicle. Look out for
the black and white rhino.

DAY 09
Today we visit the St Lucia Wetlands - a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. We will go on a boat trip Lake St Lucia,
be on the lookout for crocodiles and hippos, as well
as hundreds of different bird species. After the boat
trip, there is enough time to wander through town, or
to visit the local crocodile farm (Optional excursion).
After lunch we visit Dumazulu, a traditional Zulu village.

DAY 10
We bid farewell to the friendly staff at Gazebo, and
travel south along the coast to Umhlanga Rocks. Your
cozy family hotel is situated directly on the beach.
You have the afternoon free to enjoy the sun and sea!

DAY 11
We travel via Durban to the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park
-another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a favorite
destination for Eco-Tourism. Our accommodation in the
Cathedral Peak region is at the luxury Didima Camp in
en-suite thatched chalets. This mountain haven is inspired
by the San Bushmen, and incorporates San Rock Art into
a uniquely themed luxury camp. Experience the San Art
and history at the San Art Interpretive Centre.

DAY 12
A full day to enjoy the magnificent mountain setting
of Cathedral Peak.

DAY 13
Today we leave the Drakensberg behind and travel in
a northwesterly direction towards Bloemfontein. A few
kilometers outside the city we turn towards De Oude
Kraal, a working sheep farm. Gerhard and Marie are our
hosts, and tonight a feast waits! Marie is a gourmet
cook.

DAY 14
We leave the peace and tranquility of the farm behind
as we travel through the Great Karoo. We pass small
villages such as Edenburg, Trompsburg, Springfontein,
and Colesberg
.
Eventually we arrive at the Jewel of the Karoo, Graaff-Reinet.

DAY 15
Our travels take us towards the famous Garden Route
towards Knysna, a beautiful village with its lagoon
and Heads protecting the entrance to the sea.
Your guesthouse has a spectacular setting - from here
an unrivaled view over the whole of the Knysna lagoon.

DAY 16 & 17
Knysna and environment. On the way to Plettenberg Bay
you can stop and visit the "Big Tree", a huge
old yellowwood tree. There are many optional excursions:
the Choo-Tjoe steam train to Sedgefield, or take the
John Benn Ferry to the Heads and the Featherbed Nature
Reserve. Don't forget to try the famous Knysna Oysters!

DAY 18
We leave this part of the Garden Route behind and travel
via the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn where we visit
the Cango Caves. Oudtshoorn is well known for the Ostrich
Boom in the 1800's, and many of the houses or Ostrich
Palaces can still be seen. Our accommodation is on an
ostrich farm. Bartel the farmer will show us the farm.
Tonight at dinner you can try ostrich fillet!

DAY 19
Today we go on an outing over the amazing Swartberg
Pass - we pass the turn-off to "Die Hel",
and carry on through the impressive mountain range towards
the Klein Karoo town of Prince Albert. After a well-deserved
lunch we travel back to Oudtshoorn via Meiringspoort
- see if you can count all 26 small bridges on our way
through this Pass.

DAG 20
Today our travels take us on Route 62 via Barrydale
and Montagu to Stellenbosch. En route note the vineyards
and the Cape-Dutch style of the buildings.

DAY 21
Stellenbosch and environment - explore the town on foot,
do some shopping at " Oom Samie se winkel",
visit the Town museum, or visit one of the well-known
Wine Farms in the area.

DAY 22
Onwards to Cape Town today! Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens,
the Cape Castle, Table Mountain

DAY 23
Today an outing to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope.
You travel via Hout Bay and Muizenberg to Simon's Town.
Here we pause a while to visit the Penguin Colony at
Boulder's Beach. Tonight, a visit to the Victoria &
Alfred Waterfront for shopping and restaurants.

DAY 24
Your last day in Cape Town! What about a last visit
to the Waterfront, or an outing to Robben Island. Your
guide will make sure that you are at the Airport on
time.
